JLS Play Ponty's Big Weekend This Summer

1st March, 2010

Double Brit Award winning chart toppers JLS will headline this summer's Ponty's Big Weekend as Rhondda Cynon Taf gets its One Shot with an exclusive performance by the country's hottest act on July 24th (tickets on sale March 4 www.pontysbigweekend.com 08000147111).

News of the Pontypridd open air date comes with the band riding high. Yesterday JLS entered the Top 10 with their latest single One Shot, following number one success with Beat Again and Everybody in Love from their triple platinum album JLS, and only two weeks ago scooped two Brit Awards for British Breakthrough and British Single for Beat Again.

JB, Marvin, Aston and Oritsé  will headline the Saturday night in the stunning Ynysangharad Park as part of this year's Ponty's Big Weekend which will feature a number of other top acts on both Saturday and Sunday (a free family day). Tickets for Saturday remain at last year's price of £10 and will go on sale this Thursday March 4 on www.pontysbigweekend.com and 08000147111.

Ponty's Big Weekend is being promoted, as in previous years, by South Wales based P4 Music, Wales' largest independent music promoter and part of the Push4 Group, whose Special Events Coordinator Dave Driscoll said: "JLS are probably the hottest band in the country at the moment and it's a real coup for Rhondda Cynon Taf Council to get them to headline this year's Ponty's Big Weekend, making sure that local people have access to the top performers. There are more acts to be announced in the coming weeks for what promises to be another great weekend."

Cllr Russell Roberts, Leader of Rhondda Cynon Taf Council, said: "We are pleased to announce the return of Ponty's Big Weekend, which was a huge success last year and attracted thousands of people from across the UK to Pontypridd to see the Sugababes, Ironik and Only Men Aloud. We have worked hard to secure a 2010 line up that is just as impressive and we know we are once again set to host a smash hit weekend that will draw the attention of music lovers to our county borough.

Christian Hanagan, Head of Strategy & Public Relations added: "Just as important for raising the profile of Rhondda Cynon Taf and all it has to offer to the rest of the UK, Ponty's Big Weekend is also vital for the ongoing regeneration of the area and we hope businesses and local residents alike will benefit from the opportunities this flagship weekend presents. Now in its third consecutive year, Ponty's Big Weekend has become a significant event in Welsh Musical Event Calendar.

"Our ability to attract such a commercially successful act as JLS, stands as testimony to the reputation Pontypridd and Rhondda Cynon Taf Council now has for hosting high profile events. As in previous years the event will deliver a significant economic boost for the local economy in and around Pontypridd. The Council remains committed to making the event bigger and better each year."

The return of Ponty's Big Weekend will, this year, form part of the Valleys Heart and Soul Homecoming campaign, encouraging those with links to the region to return to and celebrate their place of origin. The Homecoming campaign was launched in Ponty with an exclusive performance by the Lost Prophets at their old school, Pontypridd High. Homecoming encourages people to return to the area and see how it has been transformed in recent years and just what it has to offer. It forms part of the wider Valleys - Heart and Soul of Wales initiative that is running for the next three years in a bid to change perceptions of the area and bring long-term economic benefits.
